On Habit Formation

I didn’t want to go for a walk today.  I went anyway.  I wanted to eat something after finishing my “allowed” 1 cup (120 grams) of Breyer’s light chocolate ice cream last night.  I did not.  In the first case, I didn’t make a decision to walk.  The decision would have been to not walk.  Such is the way that a habit is formed.  In the second case, I actively decided not to eat beyond my allotted daily points.  It was a little bit of a challenge to do this.  Hopefully in the days ahead, as decision piles upon decision, the challenge of this will diminish.  Changed behavior will make self discipline habitual.

Just an idea...

Instead of having to measure the ice cream... and not lick some off the spoon or go over your cup... Have you tried some of the light bryers ice cream bars? I just love the rocky road ones!

Just a suggestion! Hope you enjoyed your walk!

Yaaaaaaay Melting Princess. I'm delighted to see you on my blog site. Whooopie! As for the Breyer's ice cream bars, they're too tiny for me. Measuring the ice cream by the grams on little scale is very easy. Rocky road ice cream. Hmmmmmmm. I don't know if I could stop at one.

I am a fan of the weigh watchers ice cream bars. 2 points each. I can afford 2.

Great news about the walking. You may soon become the poster child for sucess with exercise.

RE: medium term goals. Please feel free to disregard the idea that follows. It is just a hunch. I thnk you might really benefit from shooting for a medium term goal that is an end in and of itself, rather than a milestone along the way to 127. Is there a weight that you would feel was a real accomplishment that you could attain and hold for a few months before continuing on down to 127. It would be nice to accomplish and tread water a bit, but at the same time, not goin overboard where you gained.

Again. Just a hunch.

I always appreciate your comments Lord Chubalot. WW bars are good, particularly the chocolate cones (yum!), but I try to avoid stuff with artificial sweeteners. I'd rather have the Breyer's as long as I can fit it into my daily points allocation. Re. the walking, my inspiration was a discussion on Kim's (Sir Man Boobs') site about exercize. As a result of that discussion, I made a commitment on April 9 to go for a daily walk for a minimum of 20 minutes. A testament to the amazing power of an on-line community. Re. a medium term goal, achieving that would be more challenging for me than just getting back to 127 and figuring out how to maintain that weight, actually the 127-132 range.
